Additional Unit Guidance for the NOCN Level 3 Diploma in Funerals

  • To complete your Diploma you will need to answer each question in full as you work through each module in the Learning Portal.
  • Word counts are provided as a guide only, to steer the level of detail/depth you need to provide for your answer. You could write less and still cover the key points required or you could write more and miss a key requirement.

Video Evidence Required

As well as your written answers, please submit video evidence for the following 5 scenarios:

  • Delivering a committal for a crematorium (max 2 minutes)
  • Delivering a committal for a burial (max 2 minutes)
  • A role-play between yourself and a Bereaved Client. (max 15 mins)
  • Delivering a eulogy (max 10 mins)

In particular, you will need to include/demonstrate the key Learning Outcomes in your videos highlighted below:

Videos 1 and 2:

Unit 1 The UK Funeral Industry

5.1. Demonstrate a committal procedure at:

(a) a crematorium, 

(b) a burial.

Please provide two videos of yourself:

Video 1 will show you delivering a committal relevant to a crematorium (approx. 2 mins)

Video 2 will show you delivering a committal relevant to a burial (approx. 2 mins)

These do not have to be on location, however, if they are not live, then please briefly describe what would be happening around you concerning mourners and deceased. List the details as bullet points under (a) and (b) above in your answers for this module.

Video 3:

Unit 4 Communicating with the Bereaved or their Representatives

(Maximum 15 minutes)

Provide a 10 to 15-minute video of yourself first meeting with a bereaved client, making introductions and explaining the process of the interview and how you will work with them as their celebrant. Your client will be writing the eulogy so you will NOT need to interview them in full about the deceased’s life. Demonstrate how you obtain key details and close the discussion.

This will also evidence Unit 9; 3.1 and 3.2; and Unit 9; 6.1

Unit 9

3. Be able to demonstrate listening skills.

3.1. Demonstrate active listening skills.

3.2. Demonstrate body language appropriate to interviewing a bereaved person/family.

Ensure that you demonstrate active listening skills and appropriate body language in your role-play video for Unit 4 1.2 (a)

6. Know how to close an interview.

6.1. Demonstrate the process of closing an interview

Ensure that you demonstrate your process of closing the interview in your role play for Unit 4 1.2 (a)

Video 4:

Unit 6 Delivering a Funeral Ceremony

2.1. Demonstrate the management of a funeral ceremony in a timely fashion.

3. Be able to deliver a eulogy in a professional manner.

(Between 5 to 7 mins)

3.1. Deliver a eulogy.

Submit a video of yourself delivering a eulogy. The eulogy must be between 5 and 7 minutes in length.

You must be dressed as you would for delivering a funeral service.

This video will also be used to evidence 4.1 items a, b, c and d below.

4. Be able to deliver a funeral in a professional manner.

4.1. Demonstrate appropriate use of the following, by a Celebrant at a funeral:

(a) dress,

(b) body language,

(c) mannerisms,

(d) emotional control. and/or appropriateness of a script.

Submit the video you prepared for 3.1 as evidence of the above.
