Carbon Reduction Plan for the School of Civil Celebrancy

Our Commitment

At The School of Civil Celebrancy, we believe that education should not only inspire people but also encourage responsible and sustainable ways of working.

As a small independent training provider, we recognise that our environmental impact is relatively modest. However, we also understand that every organisation has a responsibility to play its part in protecting the environment and reducing carbon emissions.

We are committed to continually improving the sustainability of our business by reducing waste, embracing digital technology, making thoughtful purchasing decisions and encouraging environmentally responsible practices throughout our organisation.

Our aim is to achieve Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, while continuing to deliver outstanding training, learner support and nationally recognised qualifications.

About The School of Civil Celebrancy

The School of Civil Celebrancy is an independent training provider delivering fully accredited celebrant qualifications across the United Kingdom.

We specialise in delivering professional training and regulated qualifications for those wishing to become celebrants or further develop their careers within the profession.

Our courses include:

  • NOCN Level 3 Certificate in Civil Celebrancy
  • NOCN Level 3 Diploma in Funeral Celebrancy
  • NOCN Level 3 Diploma in Celebrancy: Naming and Couples Ceremonies
  • Combined Diploma Programmes
  • Professional Development Courses
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Online Learning and Tutor Support

Our flexible learning model allows many learners to study from home, reducing unnecessary travel while making education more accessible across the United Kingdom.

Our Current Environmental Impact

As an education provider, our carbon emissions mainly arise from:

  • Electricity used within our office and training facilities.
  • Business travel.
  • Online learning platforms and digital infrastructure.
  • Website hosting and cloud-based services.
  • Office equipment.
  • Printing and office supplies.

Because much of our training is delivered online, our environmental impact is significantly lower than organisations that rely entirely on classroom-based teaching.

What we already do

We have already introduced a number of sustainable working practices.

Online learning

Our online learning environment enables learners to:

  • Study from home.
  • Submit assignments electronically.
  • Receive digital feedback.
  • Access learning resources online.
  • Attend virtual tutorials and learner support sessions.

Reducing unnecessary travel helps lower carbon emissions while giving learners greater flexibility.

Digital resources

Wherever possible we provide:

  • Digital learner handbooks.
  • Electronic policies and procedures.
  • Online assessments.
  • Digital certificates and resources where appropriate.
  • Electronic communications.

This significantly reduces paper usage.

Responsible travel

When travel is necessary, journeys are planned carefully to minimise unnecessary mileage and combine appointments wherever possible.

Virtual meetings are used whenever appropriate.

Energy efficiency

We work to reduce energy consumption by:

  • Using LED lighting.
  • Choosing energy-efficient computers and equipment.
  • Switching equipment off when not in use.
  • Making greater use of cloud-based digital systems.
  • we use renewable energy including solar

Recycling and waste

We aim to minimise waste through:

  • Recycling paper and cardboard.
  • Recycling plastics where facilities exist.
  • Reusing packaging materials.
  • Purchasing durable equipment designed to have a long working life.

Sustainable purchasing

When purchasing equipment or supplies we consider:

  • Energy efficiency.
  • Product lifespan.
  • Repairability.
  • Recycled content where available.
  • Suppliers that demonstrate responsible environmental practices.

Our future commitments

Over the coming years we will continue to improve our environmental performance by:

  • Expanding digital learning resources.
  • Continuing to reduce paper use.
  • Increasing the use of virtual meetings.
  • Reviewing suppliers to encourage more sustainable purchasing.
  • Replacing equipment with more energy-efficient alternatives as it reaches the end of its life.
  • Reducing business travel wherever practical.
  • Exploring renewable energy options as opportunities arise.

Supporting sustainable celebrancy

As a training provider, we have an opportunity to influence the next generation of celebrants.

We encourage learners to think about sustainability within their own professional practice by considering:

  • Digital communication with clients.
  • Electronic ceremony drafts.
  • Responsible printing.
  • Sustainable purchasing.
  • Efficient travel planning.
  • Environmentally considerate working practices.

By embedding these principles into our training, we hope to create positive environmental benefits that extend well beyond our own organisation.

Monitoring our progress

We review our environmental performance on an annual basis.

This includes monitoring:

  • Energy consumption.
  • Business travel.
  • Paper usage.
  • Waste and recycling.
  • Purchasing decisions.
  • Opportunities to introduce new sustainable working practices.
